Arrest of theft from vehicle suspect

At 8:30 pm on Friday evening April 30th, an alert Chestermere resident observed what appeared to be a young male break into a vehicle in the West Creek Bay area of Chestermere. The resident confronted the suspect who ran from the witness. The witness observed the suspect get in a vehicle and drive away. The witness flagged down a Chestermere Fire Department vehicle who called police. Police were able to intercept the vehicle as it left Chestermere and the suspect was arrested and a stolen digital camera was recovered. A 19 year old man from Calgary has been charged with theft, possession of stolen property, and mischief as the investigation revealed the accused had broken into and damaged a number of vehicles.

This event is a good example of how a vigilant resident and police can work together to curb this type of crime. The accused has been released on conditions to not be in the Town of Chestermere.,/p>

On April 29th, a resident of Cove Road discovered that his home had been broken into earlier that morning. No damage was done to the residence, but > two Toshiba 42" televisions were stolen, along with a black 4ftx4ft fish tank stand and a Gateway laptop computer. The resident was home as this occurred while he was sleeping. A neighbor had advised the RCMP that two teenage males were seen walking on a walking path between Cove Road and Cove Court during the snow storm at 6:15am carrying the fish tank stand. The only description that could be given is one male was wearing a grey hoodie. The location of the two males remain unknown.

Chestermere RCMP are currently looking for interested volunteers in the Town to start a Citizens on Patrol Program.

Citizens on Patrol Needs Volunteers!

Citizens on Patrol or C.O.P. Program is a community based, volunteer driven group of citizens within the town working in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Members of C.O.P. assist the R.C.M.P. in the fight against crime in within the community.

The role of a C.O.P. member is to assist the police in patrolling within the same detachmnet area and making observations and taking note of activities in the area. If questionable conduct is noticed then the C.O.P. member contacts the R.C.M.P. member to investigate the suspicious circumstances.

Interested volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, be of good character, agree to abide by the rules, requirements, Code of Ethics, or any other conditions set out by the local police service and/or the local C.O.P. Society. Volunteers must also pass the security screening required by the local R.C.M.P. Once these criteria are met, the volunteer will receive training before being issued C.O.P. identification.

Chestermere is a growing community and requires volunteers to ensure that it remains a safe place to live.
